Help! I've Opened Myself up to Demons.

Answer to an email message from a man desiring deliverance from demons he had opened himself up to.

Your letter certainly illustrates the dangers in such things as Ouija boards that appear to be so innocent. Unfortunately demons take them very seriously. The occult is only one of many things that demons use to gain strong holds in lives. The reality is that most people in the world today are, in varying degrees and manners, under the control and influence of Satan’s kingdom.

The only answer I can give you is to point you to Christ. I John 3:8 tells us that “the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” The real key is coming to an understanding of what Christ accomplished on the cross through the shedding of His blood. Just wishing and hoping to be free of Satan’s influence is not enough: we need some solid ground to stand on.

Rev. 12 contains a wonderful symbolic picture of Christ’s victory and its results. Verses 10 & 11 read: “And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.”

I remember years ago hearing a demon speaking through a woman forced to admit that the truth he feared the most was the truth of the cross and the blood that was spilled there. I believe it. Christ’s death in our place is the only ground available for the forgiveness of sins and the freedom to come before God as if we had never sinned! When we truly come to Christ in repentance and faith the benefits of that shed blood become ours then and there. When Satan tries to accuse we can plead our case based on the blood that Christ shed! He has no answer, no defense against that!

The second thing mentioned is the “word of their testimony.” That is the Word of God that has become personal and that we confess with our mouths. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness His only defense was the Word: “It is written ....” He didn’t try to debate the devil or to go by feelings or reasonings. He simply stood on the Word of God.

In Psalm 138:2, David was inspired to write, “for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” God honors His Word. He wants us to believe it and stand upon it. It is so easy for us to go by other thoughts and ideas that float around in our heads. Often these are authored by Satan to confuse and mislead us. That is why Paul spoke in II Cor. 10:5 of “casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” It doesn’t do us much good if we believe what the devil tells us more than we believe God.

One particularly important thing regarding the word is the principle in Romans 10:17, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” One thing that is sadly lacking in many places in our day is a truly ANOINTED ministry of God’s Word. God is not involved. Men minister by tradition, by natural ability, even by other spirits. It is getting more and more rare to hear ministry that actually imparts divine life. II Cor. 3:5-6. John 6:63.

I do not know if you have access to such a ministry. If not, this should be a subject of much prayer. I appreciate very much that the Lord has brought me under such a ministry. In reality, when God’s anointing is present upon a minister, it is really Christ Himself at work by the Spirit. That makes all the difference. It is our desire to share this ministry of life with all who desire it. It is available through the Midnight Cry Broadcast and also through tape recordings. These have gone to many parts of the earth and been a source of much blessing and help to God’s people.

The third thing mentioned in Rev. 12:11 is the fact that “they loved not their lives unto the death.” God will have no other gods before Him. The rich young ruler (Luke 18:18-27) found out to his sorrow that sincere religion was not enough. He had to give up his life, and his love of money and possessions cost him his soul.

It is not enough to want to get rid of the devil. We must want God to have our life — with all our heart. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” That is God’s promise!

Victory over the devil involves a complete break with him and all his works and the surrender of our lives to the Lord Jesus Christ. When He truly possesses our vessels then the devil has to leave. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be other battles — I fight them every day — but it secures the outcome of the war!

We can’t come to God with conditions — I want this or that, etc. We just come — and lay down all our arms and all our self-will and He comes in with His peace and forgiveness!

Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” That last part is a wonderful promise: HE IS a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. The devil will do all in his power to keep people from God and His Son, and from the blood and the Word of God. We have a fight on our hands if we move in God’s direction but it is a fight we can win because Christ has given us ground to stand on! He has already defeated the devil. It is time for us to enter into His victory.

Sometimes this happens in a moment but often it involves a process as well. God knows what is needed to accomplish His purpose in us and often the process itself is very necessary. What good would it do for God to chase the devil away without anything changing in us? He wants to bring us to the place where instead of the devil possessing us for evil and death, Christ possesses us unto eternal life. There is no middle ground: it is one or the other.

God can and will help you but only as you seek Him from your heart and learn to stand on the ground He has provided for you through His Son. No other way will avail.

Perhaps these few thoughts will help to point you in the right direction. Please write further, particularly if we can help you by sharing the ministry of God’s anointed Word the Lord has given us.
